Let’s build more affordable housing

——By Mayor London Breed

My fellow San Franciscans,

Our City is on the road to recovery. Our vaccination rates are among the highest in our nation, and our businesses are reopening once again.

Throughout the course of the pandemic my office has continued to prioritize the needs of our most vulnerable residents and provide critical resources to our communities to minimize the impacts the pandemic has brought on them.

Let’s not forget—we also had our plan to tackle the housing crisis interrupted by COVID-19. Like many of the issues we face every day, the housing crisis has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. Now, as our economy is recovering, the opportunity is in front of us to address a major challenge for the City.

We have to build housing that is affordable at all income levels, and we must continue to find a way to build and fund affordable housing units to keep workers, families and our communities in San Francisco. We must do it in an equitable way, making sure that these units are serving residents in across our city.

There is historic underinvestment in affordable housing in some of our Westside neighborhoods like the Sunset District, and we must look for ways to increase the affordable housing unit stock in the neighborhood.

In order to produce high-quality affordable homes for families, we must produce the maximum number of units needed to help tackle the housing crisis. This won’t be easy and it will require support from Westside residents and neighborhood organizations. My administration is committed to working with these communities to get housing built in the Sunset and across the City.

We also must to do more to keep current residents in their homes and create affordable housing opportunities for future generations of San Franciscans. This is precisely why we are working to build affordable housing at 2550 Irving Street, an 100% affordable housing development in a high-resource neighborhood in need of housing units that serves not only residents from the neighborhood, but also all San Franciscans. Many of the nearly 100 apartments will be reserved for families who live in District 4 or need housing in San Francisco. This will also be expanding access and opportunities for families in the Sunset and the City.

As someone who was born and raised in San Francisco, I saw firsthand how communities were left behind during the prosperous times and the down turns of our city’s economy. During our last economic recovery from the financial crisis, we did not build enough housing to catch up on the housing needs as more workers moved to San Francisco. We cannot afford to make that same mistake again.

We need to build more housing at all income levels especially affordable housing and we need to build them now. Addressing the housing crisis is critical so that these families and workers can continue to work and play in the City where they live.

Stay safe and healthy.
