Selecting San Francisco’s next top prosecutor to advance public safety and justice

By Mayor London Breed

After the recent recall election, it has become necessary for me to appoint someone to lead the District Attorney’s Office. Due to the complexity and importance of this decision, I have been talking to community members, business owners, judges, and lawyers about the importance of this office and hearing from them what qualifications they would like to see in a new District Attorney. These meetings have been important and so helpful in understanding how people feel about what’s happening in San Francisco, and what the next District Attorney needs to be focused on.

It has been expressed to me time after time that the recall does not mean that criminal justice reform in San Francisco is going away. It is still important to so many in our city that those who have been involved in the criminal justice system are given the chance to positively contribute to the community we share. But people have also been clear that they want accountability for those who cross the line, especially those who commit repeat offenses. And that we need to do more to support victims of crime, including providing language access and other support to ensure our victims have a say in obtaining justice.

Residents would like to see a balanced approach in public safety and reform. I share the same sentiment that accountability needs to be prioritized when a crime is committed and the line is crossed. People want to feel safe when they go out. They want their friends and family to feel safe as our city comes back to life and visitors return from all over the world.

From these community conversations, while I often hear that there are different ways to hold people accountable, it is about coming to a reasonable conclusion around justice, not just for the perpetrators but for the people who unfortunately fall victim to crimes. That can mean the need for strengthening victim resources, services and support in a complex justice system that is often far too frustrating to navigate, or rehabilitation and community services for those who have chosen the wrong paths for various reasons.

But let me be clear – there is no excuse for committing violent crime and inflicting harm on others. A crime is a crime, and justice must work for all. Ultimately, holding criminals accountable, keeping people safe and criminal justice reform can both happen at the same time.

So far many qualified and community-recommended candidates have come forward to become a part of this important dialogue of making the necessary changes in the District Attorney’s Office to uphold its mission of protecting public safety. This will be a hard decision, and an important one, and I appreciate everyone who has put in the time to either be considered or share their opinions.

Conversations with the community are still ongoing as we need to make sure that voices from different neighborhoods like Visitacion Valley, Chinatown, the Sunset and Richmond District are heard. It is critical to me and my office that we hear from neighbors what qualities in potential candidates I should be looking for in a new district attorney and how they think that the District Attorney’s Office can collaborate better with the community. If you also want to voice out your concerns, please email my office at [email protected].

In the upcoming weeks, as we wrap up this important process, I will be announcing the next person who will take on the role as San Francisco’s next top prosecutor, and we will get to work on addressing concerns around public safety while still advancing the very important criminal justice reform work our City values.

London N. Breed
