Lunar New Year Safety Awareness

By Mayor London Breed

Spring Festival is upon us in two weeks, and although our plans may be different this year in order to keep each other safe and healthy, it is important that we continue to be on the lookout for the scams that unfortunately arise this time of year.

The San Francisco Police Department would like to remind all members of our Chinese community to stay vigilant when strangers approach for any reason. During this time of the year, con-artists prey on people’s love and care for their friends and family members for the purpose of scamming. Scams come in different ways, and one that impacts our Chinese community is the blessing scam. This is when strangers claim to provide relief from a curse or illness or conduct “purification” ceremonies in which cash and valuable items must be offered as part of the process.

The “Blessing Scam” Tip Line is 1-415-553-9212. Some tips for the community around the “Blessing Scam.”

Be aware of strangers.

Do not withdraw money at banks/ATMs with strangers.

Do not entrust money or valuables to strangers offering prayers or healing.

Do not allow strangers into your home.

Anyone who is confronted by scammers or anyone who knows of a senior who was approached by scammers should contact the police. Reports can be made at any SFPD District Station or by calling Dispatch at (415) 553-0123 and requesting an officer to take a report. Cantonese speakers can leave tips on a special tip line by calling (415) 553-9212 or

1-855-737-3847.

In addition, the Department also strongly advises a few other important personal and residential safety tips:

Shop or run errands in groups to avoid being alone

Carry minimal cash, and make sure valuables and cash are not in public view

Keep valuables out of plain sight when exiting vehicles

If necessary to stow away valuables in vehicles, do so prior to arrival to destination in order to avoid opening back trunk in public view

Keep traditional home decorations inside to avoid being identified

In addition to the work by the Community Liaison Unit, Special Operation Bureau and Special Victim Unit, the Police Department will also staff foot beat officers on commercial corridors and patrol sectors, while plainclothes officers will focus their efforts on hotspots in order our community safe during as we celebrate this important tradition in San Francisco.
