Mitigating learning loss

By Mayor London Breed

My fellow San Franciscans,

In the midst of the pandemic, our City invested over $100 million for Emergency Child and Youth Care Centers, the Community Hub Initiative, and the Summer Together Initiative, providing free programs to support children, youth, and families. These efforts have included emergency child and youth care centers for frontline and essential workers, in-person support for students enrolled in remote learning programs, and free summer camp programming for San Francisco Unified School District students.

With the significant investments in education we made last year, we knew that it was critical for our City’s most vulnerable students to have the necessary resources to excel during the pandemic.

As students prepare for a Fall return to the classroom, it is more important than ever to continue investing in their education and continue working to close the widening achievement gap.

That’s why I included an investment of $15 million in my proposed budget to address student learning loss and education recovery for our children and youth. This new investment will help mitigate learning loss resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and expand academic support, which includes high dosage tutoring, social emotional learning and literacy programs.

It is important that we find way to continue to help students. The Community Hubs Initiative, which provided in-person support for distance learning and out of school time activities for San Francisco’s highest needs children and youth, served nearly 3,000 students at 78 locations throughout the City, successfully completing the 2020-2021 school year.

I want to thank the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families, Recreation & Parks, San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco Unified School District, community partners, and the private sector for joining my call to action to ensure our City’s most vulnerable students continued to have the support and resources they needed to learn, grow, and thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I hope you continue to stay safe and healthy.
